Cold wall effect is an important challenge for lining coatings, which has been studied and tested abroad, but rarely reported in China. Crude oil storage tanks or some pipelines due to the requirements of the process, the internal temperature is usually higher than the air temperature, there will be a temperature difference in the tank or the inner and outer walls of the pipeline, the temperature difference seriously affects the corrosion of carbon steel, this phenomenon is called the cold wall effect.

Equipment description:
With reference to the heat transfer theory, the diagram of the cold wall effect is shown in the figure below. As can be seen from the figure, the temperature reduction phenomenon is obvious in the lining paint, because the thermal conductivity of the paint is several quantities lower than that of carbon steel.
The temperature difference between the two sides of the lining coating will cause the partial pressure of water vapor on both sides of the coating to be different, so that the water vapor has a pressure difference to penetrate the coating and reach the steel substrate. If the penetration resistance of the coating is not excellent, it will lead to oxidation of the steel surface or loss of coating adhesion, which will lead to coating failure such as foaming and falling off. A large number of studies have shown that the lower the water vapor permeability of the coating, the better the cold wall resistance effect.
The cold wall effect test simulates the effects of this temperature difference on the coating and carbon steel under laboratory conditions. According to the improvement of NACE TM0174-2002, the cold wall effect test equipment and template are shown in the figure below.
