The fill power index, a key indicator of down quality, reflects its inherent elasticity and thermal insulation properties. It also indirectly reflects the dispersion of the various components of down. Fill power testing is a crucial aspect of down testing. It refers to the elasticity of down (feathers) and is determined by measuring the volume occupied by a certain amount of down (feather) sample under constant pressure in a container of a certain diameter. Since a higher fill power index corresponds to a greater amount of still air contained within, and still air acts as an excellent thermal insulator, there is a good linear correlation between the fill power of down and the thermal insulation properties of down products.
