The reaction formula of Karl Fischer’s reagent with water is:
I2 + SO2 + 3C5 H5 N + H2O —→ 2C5 H5 N•HI + C5 H5 N•SO3 ……………… (1)
C5 H5 N•SO3 + CH3OH —→ C5 H5 N•HSO4CH3 …………………………… (2)
The reagent solution used is a mixture of dominant iodine and sulfur dioxide filled with arsenic, methanol, usw. Iodine is formed on the anode by electrolysis, and the iodine produced is, according to Faraday’s law, directly proportional to the amount of charge. As follows:

It can be seen from equation (1) that the number of moles of iodine participating in the reaction is equal to the number of moles of water. The sample is injected into the electrolyte, the water in the sample participates in the reaction, and the iodine consumption in the reaction process can be reflected through the instrument, and the iodine consumption can be calculated according to the electricity used in the electrolysis of the same amount of iodine, and the measured water component is directly displayed on the liquid crystal display. The instrument adopts electrolytic current automatic control system, the size of the electrolytic current can be automatically controlled according to the content of water in the sample, the maximum can reach 400mA. In the electrolysis process, the water is gradually reduced, and the titration speed is correspondingly reduced until the electrolytic end point control loop is opened. This system guarantees high precision, sensitive valves and high speeds during analysis. Zusätzlich, in the measurement process, it is inevitable that some interfering factors will be introduced, such as the intrusion of moisture from the air, so that the titration tank absorbs moisture and generates blank current. Jedoch, since the instrument has the function of storing blank current, the number displayed on the display screen is the true water content of the sample being tested.
